The Gayatri Mantra was chronicled in the Rig Veda, which was written in Sanskrit about 2500 to 3500 years ago.The Gayatri Mantra is a wonderful part of the daily spiritual practice. Because it is a pressing and heartfelt appeal to the Supreme Being of enlightenment, it can be applied universally. It really does not matter what your religion, color or ethnicity is - what matters is your intention and your authenticity, and your willingness to be moved.

                The ancient Hindu scriptures describe how the sage Vishwamitra was given the Gayatri mantra by the Supreme Being as a reward for his many years of penance and meditation. This was to be a gift for all humanity.It is said that this sacred prayer scroll through the entire universe from the heart of the singer, calling for peace and divine wisdom for all.The Gayatri Mantra inspires wisdom in us. In a very simple but beautiful language, he said: "May the divine light of the Supreme Being enlighten our intellect to lead us along a path of righteousness."

Mantra:

 ॐ भूर्भुव: स्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेन्यं ।
 भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि, धीयो यो न: प्रचोदयात् ।।

Om Bhoor Bhuwah Swaha, Tatsavitur Varenyam |
Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi Dhiyo Yonah Prachodayat ||

Summary of the Gayatri Mantra:

Gayatri Mantra (the mother of the Vedas), the supreme mantra in Hindu and Hinduism beliefs, inspires wisdom. Its meaning is that "May Almighty God illuminate our intellect to lead us on the right path" mantra is also a prayer to the "patron of bright and life." - Sun (savitur).

My God! You are the God of life,
Remover of pain and sadness,
The Giver of happiness,
Oh! Creator of the Universe,
May we receive thy foremost sin-ruined light,
You can guide our intellect in the right direction.

Gayatri, the Goddess of five face is said to have domain over the five senses or pranas, and assure these 5 life efforts of those who chant the Gayatri Mantra. In his role as protector, Gayatri is called Savitri.


Origin of the Gayatri Mantra:

The Vedas are widely considered to be the source of all true knowledge, the word "Veda" itself meaning "Knowledge". Gayatri Devi also gave to mankind the "Gayatri Mantra", also known as the "Guru Mantra". It is one of the earliest  mantras, and generally thought of as being throughout the highest and most powerful mantras of all. This Gayatri mantra is then usually assign to as "the Mother of the Vedas". Lord shri Krishna had announced  in The Gita to Arjuna - "Among all the mantras, I am the Gayatri".


Chanting of the Gayatri Mantra: 

The ideal times to sing the mantra three times a day - at dawn, noon and dusk. These times are known as the three sandhyas - morning, midday and evening. The maximum benefit to chant the mantra is said to be achieved by chanting it 108 times. However, we can sing for 3, 9, or 18 times when pressed for time.

Rishis selected the words of the Gayatri Mantra and arranged so that they not only convey meaning but also create specific power of wisdom just through their enunciation. Chanting Gayatri Mantra removes all obstacles in our path to increased wisdom and spiritual growth and improvement. The instruct and powers incorporated in the Gayatri Mantra fulfill this purpose. Wisdom begins just emerging soon after Jap (recitation) of the Gayatri Mantra is performed.

The synopsis of the Gayatri mantra are spoken to positively affect all the chakras or energy centers in the human body - so, pronunciation and proper enunciation of Gayatri Mantra are important.
